The street Portas do Carmo is one of the main streets of the Centro Historico corridor. It is located in front of the Brazil's first medical school between the Terreiro de Jesus with and Largo do Pelourinho, from here you have easy access to the key points of the city.
It is an easy walk to the "Elevador Lacerda" that takes you down to the old slave market, Mercado Modelo, and the port, "Terminal Maritimo".
At the "terminal Maritimo" you can catch a boat to visit the islands of the bay, the largest of which is Itaparica.
You can also catch the catamaran that travels to Morro de Sao Paulo on the outside island of Tinhare.
As mentioned in our hostel description our hostel is just accross the street from the garden of the old school of medicine.
Also in this building are the museums: Museu Afro, Museu do Sertão, and Museu de Arquiologia e Etnoligia.
In this area are the colonial churches Igreja de São Francisco and the Catedral Basilica.
Surrounded by bars museums, restaurants, and theaters, there's always a party in the street usually with the infectious joyful beat of Olodum.
